Although breastfeeding occurs naturally, proper preparation is essential. Not all mothers can provide exclusive breastfeeding without guidance. Learning the correct breastfeeding technique helps ensure optimal nutrition for the baby.
Both mothers and fathers should understand proper breastfeeding practices. Stress can slow milk production, and emotional support from partners plays a crucial role in reducing maternal stress.

Why Is Proper Breastfeeding Technique Important?
During pregnancy, babies receive nutrients through the placenta. After birth, breast milk becomes the primary source of nutrition. Breast milk adapts to the baby’s developmental needs over time.
However, many mothers experience challenges such as low milk supply, breast pain, or swelling. These issues should be addressed promptly through professional lactation consultation.
Proper breastfeeding techniques help stimulate optimal milk flow, support infant nutrition, and strengthen the emotional bond between mother and baby.
7 Steps to Proper Breastfeeding
1. Ensure Proper Baby Head Position
The baby’s head should be slightly elevated to help swallowing. Support the head with your hand or a pillow.
2. Align the Baby’s Nose with the Nipple
Position the baby so the nose aligns with the nipple, encouraging the baby to open their mouth naturally.
3. Bring the Baby Toward the Breast
Wait until the baby opens their mouth wide before gently bringing them closer to the breast.
4. Gently Touch the Baby’s Lower Lip
If needed, gently stimulate the baby’s lower lip to encourage proper latch.
5. Ensure Proper Latch
The baby should latch onto both the nipple and a large portion of the areola. Proper latch should not cause pain.
6. Correct Position if Necessary
If pain occurs, gently insert a clean finger into the baby’s mouth to release suction and reposition.
7. Monitor Feeding Duration
Feeding sessions may last from 5 minutes to 1 hour. Newborns typically feed every 2–3 hours.
The AMUBIDA Formula
A helpful way to remember proper latch technique:
- Areola: Most of the areola should be in the baby’s mouth
- Mu (Mouth): Baby’s mouth opens wide
- Bi (Lips): Lower lip flanged outward
- Da (Chin): Chin touches the breast
Signs of Proper Breastfeeding
- Baby’s mouth and chin are close to the breast
- Areola is mostly inside the baby’s mouth
- Baby’s body faces the mother
- Baby swallows milk calmly
- Mother feels no nipple pain
Breastfeeding Equipment to Prepare
- Nursing pads
- Nursing bras
- Support pillows
- Breast pump (if needed)
- Nipple cream
Proper breastfeeding techniques can be learned and improved over time. If challenges arise, professional guidance can help ensure a healthy and comfortable breastfeeding experience.
