The earlier HPV is detected, the easier it is to manage and monitor, with a higher chance of preventing serious complications. In addition to the HPV DNA test, another commonly used screening method for detecting HPV-related abnormalities is the <\/span>Pap smear (Pap test)<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Is an HPV DNA Test?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>HPV DNA test<\/b> is a medical screening performed on the female reproductive organs to detect the presence of HPV. HPV is a virus that can infect both men and women; however, the HPV DNA test is currently available only for women.<\/span><\/p>\n

HPV infection may cause:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Genital warts<\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Abnormal cell growth<\/span>
    \n<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Cervical cancer (cancer of the cervix)<\/span>\n

    Doctors strongly recommend HPV DNA testing for the following groups:<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Women with <\/span>abnormal or positive Pap smear results<\/b>
      \n<\/b><\/li>\n
    • Women <\/span>over 30 years old<\/b>, or under 30 but already sexually active<\/span>

    • Women at higher risk of HPV due to unprotected sex or multiple sexual partners<\/span>\n

      Purpose of the HPV DNA Test<\/b><\/h2>\n

      The primary purpose of the HPV DNA test is to <\/span>detect HPV infection early<\/b> and support early detection of cervical cancer. A positive HPV result does <\/span>not<\/b> automatically mean cancer is present.<\/span><\/p>\n

      There are many types of HPV, and not all of them cause cancer. However, <\/span>high-risk HPV types<\/b>, such as <\/span>HPV 16 and 18<\/b>, are strongly associated with cervical cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Difference Between Pap Smear and HPV DNA Test<\/b><\/h2>\n

      The main difference lies in <\/span>what each test detects<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n

      • Pap smear<\/b> examines cervical cells to identify abnormal or precancerous changes.<\/span>

      • HPV DNA test<\/b> detects the <\/span>genetic material of HPV<\/b> in the cervix, even before visible cell changes occur.<\/span>\n

        Preparation Before the HPV DNA Test<\/b><\/h2>\n

        The HPV DNA test may be performed alone or combined with a Pap smear. To ensure accurate results, follow these preparations:<\/span><\/p>\n

        • Do not perform vaginal douching (using water, soap, medication, creams, or cleansers)<\/span>
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Avoid using tampons<\/span>
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Avoid vaginal medications for at least <\/span>2 days<\/b> before the test<\/span>
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Ensure you are <\/span>not menstruating<\/b> during the test<\/span>
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Avoid sexual intercourse for <\/span>2 days<\/b> prior to the test<\/span>
          \n<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Empty your bladder before the examination for comfort<\/span>\n

          HPV DNA Test Procedure & Result Timeline<\/b><\/h2>\n

          The HPV DNA test is a quick procedure, usually taking <\/span>less than 10 minutes<\/b>, and does not require anaesthesia. It generally causes minimal discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n

          When combined with a Pap smear, the procedure includes:<\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          1. The patient removes clothing from the waist down<\/span>
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          2. Lying on the examination table with knees bent and legs apart or placed on stirrups<\/span>
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          3. A cloth is provided for comfort and privacy<\/span>
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          4. A <\/span>speculum<\/b> is gently inserted into the vagina to visualise the cervix<\/span>
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          5. A soft brush or spatula is used to collect cervical cell samples<\/span>
            \n<\/span><\/li>\n
          6. The sample is placed in a special container and sent to the laboratory<\/span>\n

            <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Test results are <\/span>not available on the same day<\/b>. Typically, results are ready within <\/span>1\u20132 weeks<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

            How to Interpret HPV DNA Test Results<\/b><\/h2>\n

            HPV DNA test results are classified as <\/span>negative<\/b> or <\/span>positive<\/b>:<\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            • Negative result<\/b>: No high-risk HPV types detected<\/span>
              \n<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Positive result<\/b>: High-risk HPV detected, which may increase the risk of cervical or other HPV-related cancers<\/span>\n

              There are approximately <\/span>14 high-risk HPV types<\/b>, including:<\/span><\/p>\n

              HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68<\/span><\/p>\n

              Among these, <\/span>HPV 16 and HPV 18<\/b> are responsible for most HPV-related cancers.<\/span>
              \n<\/span> Low-risk HPV types (such as HPV 6 and 11) typically cause genital warts and are not associated with cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

              If the result is positive, your doctor may recommend additional monitoring or further diagnostic procedures, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n

              • Colposcopy<\/b> \u2013 a closer examination of the cervix using a magnifying device<\/span>
